The Wild World of Noah's Eating Habits

Noah has always had strong opinions about food. When he was younger, his menu was short and unimpressive: yogurt, fruit, Goldfish crackers, French fries, and pizza. If it did not come in a brightly colored package or from a drive-thru, he was not interested. I relied on Pediasure to fill the gaps in his nutrition and prayed he would not turn into a giant French fry.

Then Shane came along, full of confidence and determination. He declared, “I will get Noah to eat more.” His weapon of choice: the humble peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Shane believed in the power of patience. Noah believed in the power of stubbornness.

The first battle began on a Saturday at lunch. Noah received fruit, yogurt, and half a PB&J. Once he ate, he could go play. Hours passed. Noah remained at the table. He did not complain, he only plotted his escape twice, but mostly he sat and stared at that sandwich like it had personally offended him. Five hours later, it was bedtime or PB&J. Noah chose survival and took the bite.

Day two was a repeat performance. Fruit, yogurt, drink, half a PB&J, and five hours of Noah’s silent protest. At last, just before dinner, the sandwich disappeared. From that weekend forward, Noah officially added PB&J to his menu. Every new food introduction followed the same process: endurance, persistence, eventual surrender. The time shrank from five hours to two hours, then to one. Now Noah eats in a normal amount of time. Victory.

Today Noah is far from picky. He will eat almost anything, though his methods are questionable. He enjoys ice cream straight from the container. He finds it hilarious to use a giant serving spoon for dinner. He sometimes eats like our dog Ozzy, complete with barking sound effects. I warned him that if he continues, I will serve his dinner in a bowl on the floor. He also once thought it would be a good idea to drink water from Ozzy’s dish. Do not worry, this is not encouraged, but with Noah, it was not shocking either.
